FOREIGN ATTACK | NATIONAL SECURITY
CONFIRMED: DRONE STRIKE CAUSED GAS VESSEL FIRE IN EGYPT

Egypt’s Cabinet confirmed that a drone caused the fire that broke out aboard two gas vessels at Damietta Port, marking one of the most serious security incidents affecting the country’s energy infrastructure amid escalating regional tensions.  

What’s new: Preliminary investigations found that an unidentified drone struck the U.S.-owned floating storage vessel Energos Winter, with the fire later spreading to a second vessel, GasLog Salem. Authorities said the blaze was quickly contained and no injuries or fatalities were reported.

Energy security: The government said it has activated contingency plans to safeguard domestic energy supplies, with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly confirming that Egypt has secured alternative gas sources to meet demand while investigations continue.

Why it matters: The incident underscores how the widening regional conflict is beginning to affect critical infrastructure beyond traditional flashpoints. While Egypt says energy supplies remain secure, the attack has heightened concerns over the security of vital shipping and energy routes linked to the Suez Canal.

IMF | LOAN | ECONOMIC REFORM
IMF SEVENTH LOAN REVIEW DONE

Egypt secured IMF Executive Board approval for the seventh review of its USD 8 billion loan program, unlocking USD 1.8 billion in fresh financing and marking another milestone in the country’s economic reform agenda.  

What’s new: The approved package includes USD 1.5 billion under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and USD 272 million under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF), bringing Egypt’s total IMF disbursements to approximately USD 7.3 billion.

The IMF’s verdict: The Fund praised Egypt’s resilience amid the regional conflict, citing exchange rate flexibility, energy price reforms, and fiscal discipline. However, it stressed that accelerating privatization, reducing the state’s role in the economy, and strengthening the private sector remain critical priorities.

Why it matters: The latest disbursement provides Egypt with a significant boost to its foreign currency reserves while signaling continued international confidence in the country’s reform program. It also sets the stage for the eighth and final review of the current IMF agreement later this year.

Egypt secured a historic bronze medal at the Fencing World Championships after defeating Israel in the team competition, marking another major achievement for the country’s growing presence on the international fencing stage.  

A rising force: The achievement highlights Egypt’s growing strength in fencing, with the country producing internationally ranked athletes and earning medals across major continental and global competitions.
