EGYPT LOSES TO BRAZIL AS WORLD CUP COUNTDOWN BEGINS

Four days left until the 2026 World Cup, eight days left until Egypt’s first match, but the Pharaohs tested their level in a warm-up friendly versus Brazil earlier today — narrowly losing 2-1.

How it went down: The Pharaohs were beaten by Brazil in their final friendly before the World Cup, providing head coach Hossam Hassan with a last opportunity to assess his squad against elite opposition. Bruno Guimaraes gave Brazil an early lead from inside the box before Egypt equalised through Mostafa Ziko. Endrick scored Brazil’s winner in the second half after an assist from Raphinha. Egypt’s head coach came out disappointed by the defeat but satisfied with the players’ performance against the five-time world champions.

Eyes on the tournament: Despite the result, the focus now shifts to the World Cup itself, where Egypt will look to build on its qualification campaign and compete against some of the best teams in world football.

When a country accounts for more than half of an entire region's e-sports audience, that isn't a coincidence. It's a signal.

Egypt's rise as the dominant force in MENA's gaming landscape is underpinned by something simple, demographics: The country's median age sits at 24, a full six years younger than the global average. Over half the population is under 30, and more than nine in ten Egyptian internet users engage with some form of gaming, the highest penetration rate in the entire region. Gone are the times when parents would scold kids for playing something purposeless. Gaming has become the defining digital culture for millions of Egyptian youths — a culture so big now that you can make money from it.

The world of e-sports: E-sports (short for electronic sports) is organized, competitive video gaming where individuals or teams face off against each other. Similar to traditional sports, it involves structured leagues, tournaments, prize money, rigorous practice, and large audiences. And with the industry's growing prevalence, today’s Egyptian gamers could become tomorrow’s prize-winning champions — something that’s happening right now.

A mobile app that wins you millions: Mohamed Light — an Egyptian professional player born in 2004 — became the first person in history to win three Clash Royale World Championship titles. Yes, that silly mobile game some download to pass time. That very same silly mobile app can make you millions now, and even put you Wikipedia. Light’s latest world championship win Atlanta in November 2025 garnered him USD 200,000 (EGP 10.5 million) in prize money in front of nearly 700,000 viewers — and that’s without the sponsorship money too.

And his story is not a one-off. Egyptian teams like RA'AD have claimed titles across VALORANT's MENA circuit. RA’AD is also represented by Anas Badr, the highest-ranking African EA Sports FC player, with several local and regional accolades to his name. Such stories prove that there’s a growing generation of players, streamers, and content creators who are building careers that didn’t exist a decade ago.

The infrastructure is matching the ambition: Insomnia Egypt, now in its seventh edition, draws 25,000+ fans over three days and has brought the MENA region's top competitive teams to Cairo every year since 2018. GAMERGY Egypt — one of the world's largest gaming festivals — launched its first local edition in 2025 with 40,000 anticipated attendees and EGP 2 million in prizes, backed by the Youth and Sports Ministry and the Egyptian Esports Federation. An events calendar that barely existed five years ago now anchors Egypt's position as the competitive gaming hub of the region.

What converts passion into profession, though, isn't events or talent alone. It's access — and that's where enablers become decisive…

NO NEW IMF LOANS NEEDED: PM MADBOULY

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly says Egypt does not plan to seek a new financing program from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) once its current agreement expires at the end of 2026, signaling growing confidence in the country’s economic trajectory.

Speaking after a cabinet meeting, Madbouly said the government sees no need for another IMF funding arrangement once the current Extended Fund Facility concludes in December 2026.

Current talks continue: The announcement comes as IMF officials complete the latest reviews of Egypt’s reform program, which could unlock around USD 1.6 billion in additional financing if approved. Madbouly described discussions with the IMF, the Central Bank, and the Finance Ministry as progressing positively.

A vote of confidence: The government argues that recent economic indicators—including stronger growth, improving foreign currency availability, and greater investor confidence—show that reforms are beginning to deliver results despite regional instability. Officials say the focus will shift toward attracting investment, expanding private-sector activity, and maintaining reform momentum rather than relying on new IMF-backed financing programs.

GAZA CEASEFIRE TALKS RESUME IN CAIRO

Ceasefire negotiations aimed at ending the war in Gaza have resumed in Cairo, with Egypt once again playing a central role in efforts to secure a truce and advance humanitarian relief. Egyptian mediators hosted a new round of talks involving representatives from Hamas, Israel, Qatar, and the United States, as efforts continue to bridge remaining gaps over a ceasefire agreement and hostage-prisoner exchange deal.

Key sticking points: Negotiators are reportedly focusing on the duration of a ceasefire, the release of hostages and detainees, humanitarian aid access, and arrangements for Gaza’s post-war governance and security.

Humanitarian urgency: The renewed talks come amid worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza and growing international pressure to secure a ceasefire that would allow aid deliveries to expand and civilian suffering to be reduced.
